Four things to include in a first message

1. Where the property is. A tree-shaded lot near College Hill, a young subdivision in Andover and a farmstead outside Newton sit on different soil and fall under different local offices, so even a street name narrows down the likely plan.
2. The job, with rough measurements. Maybe it is a two-car driveway, a side pad for a trailer, a patio off the kitchen, front steps, a pole barn floor, or a tired slab that needs replacing. Paced-off dimensions are good enough at this stage.
3. The heaviest thing that will rest on it. A sedan, a three-quarter-ton pickup, a fifth-wheel, a spa full of water or a floor jack under a tractor each call for a different base and slab depth.
4. The current surface. Grass, crushed rock, broken concrete or aging blacktop. Anything that must be demolished and trucked off before forming begins adds its own line to the estimate.

Photos that save a trip

Stand back and capture the entire work area in one frame, taken from the curb or the patio door, so the lay of the land shows. Then move in close on any crack, dropped panel, flaking spot or chipped corner. The most useful picture of all is often one snapped during a downpour, or within an hour after it, because it reveals which way the water flows and where puddles linger. On level Kansas ground, that runoff pattern affects the finished slab about as much as the mix itself.

After you send it

The contractor sets up a time to walk the property. Seeing the soil, taking elevations and checking the path for a ready-mix truck settles things a photo cannot, which is why an honest scope and number come after the visit rather than before. When the estimate arrives, look for the base, slab depth, reinforcement, joint plan and finish spelled out in writing, which makes it simple to hold two proposals side by side.
